Decorating With Mirrors

Are you looking to make a drastic change in a room, or just add some decorative accents? What about making a room appear larger, more open or brighter? Decorating with mirrors can help you achieve each of these goals.

In attempt to magnify and celebrate every detail of his mansion, 15th century French King Louis XIV made mirrors popular in decorating with his ornate, grand Rococo style. Since then, decorating with mirrors has migrated into everyday homes to spruce up ordinary spaces.

A mirror is the ultimate illusion creator. If effectively used, decorating with mirrors can be used to trick the eye, or “trompe d’oeil,” as the French king would say.

While mirrors can do wonderful things for a room, they also can be used on furniture, such as tabletops, cabinets and shelving units. Applying them between the lattice work of any piece of furniture, or in any pattern with panes for separation, can create beautiful interest to any piece of furniture, door or wall decoration.

When decorating, mirrors can be used as alternatives to artwork. One great way to enhance an outdoor view is to hang a mirror across from it, capturing the landscape in an ever-changing piece of art. Hanging mirrors close to windows is a great way to brighten a room by increasing its access to natural light.

Hanging mirrors can enhance the size of a room. Wish the wall at the far end of the dining room extended out a few more feet? Hang a large mirror and the room will appear much longer because of the reflected surface and continuation of light. Use mirrors to enhance the length of an entryway or hallway by hanging them lengthwise down the space or by hanging a large mirror at the end of the space. These tricks direct your eye to perceive added dimension with reflected images.

Mirrors also can be used to accent architectural details. A mirror echoing the shape of an arch or sharp lines of a room will highlight and complement the shape.

Decorate with Mirrors Your Way:

Personalize a mirror in any room with a little glue or paint. Here are some ideas on how to turn everyday objects into beautiful displays for your wall by adding mirrors.

Clothespin Mirror Frame: Glue painted clothespins in a pattern on a piece of plywood with a mirror in the center for a rustic cottage look.

Lattice Mirror: Find a trellis or another lattice-like object. Cut a mirror to the shape of one of the open areas of the trellis at the center and attach it with either glue or brackets.

Garbage Pail Mirror: Use metal and glass glue to secure a circular mirror to the center of a garbage pail lid. This might sound strange, but it actually looks quite beautiful when finished and fits in nicely with a contemporary decorating style.

Plate Mirror: Cut mirror tiles into fitting shapes for any one plate, or a collection. Once the mirrors have been glued onto the plate with china or pottery glue, they can be arranged into unique patterns on the wall.
