The flow of Chi is distinctive in every home and space. Chi, which is the energy an object, person or place emits, relates to the art of decorating using feng shui elements and energies.
Chi is classified into two main categories: yin and yang, which represents opposite forces, and the five elements, which help to rebalance the opposing energies in a home.
Each of the five elements has its own distinguishing personality, which enables it to either get along with the other elements or to fight against them if the balance is not exact; this makes coordinating feng shui elements and energies essential for creating a harmonious atmosphere.
In order for a person to get a positive flow of Chi in their home, they must be aware of the overall concept of feng shui elements and energies. Every object, from computers to potted plants, is composed of one of the five feng shui elements and has either yin or yang energies attached.
Yin and Yang
As essential factors of feng shui, yin and yang energies each have its own unique features. For example, yang energy is vital because it helps a person stay motivated, giving them the drive needed to get things done. However, too much yang energy can make a person feel chaotic, frenzied and over-stimulated. It also may discourage them from being able to relax.
The basic principle of feng shui is to create harmony and balance; because energy is not concrete, yin and yang energies can replace and overpower one another. Because each element has an effect on everything a person does, it is important to effectively interpret and balance the effects they may have on a person’s life. It is necessary to be aware of the unique properties found in each of the feng shui elements and energies.
Wood
Wood, which is represented by spring, the color green and various wooden items like furniture and plants, is the creator of the five-element cycle. Also symbolizing birth and early childhood, wood represents creativity and innovation, as well as sociability and community-mindedness. It can be flexible, bending like a willow tree, or strong and firm, like an oak. Because softwood is yin and hardwood is yang, it is important to keep a balance between these two feng shui elements and energies.
Fire
The most yang of all elements, the fire element represents the growing years before puberty. Fire is characterized by lights, candles and the color red. For example, a table lamp with a red shade makes an excellent fire remedy; if placed in the southern area of a home, it may help increase personal recognition. Though this element emits energy and enthusiasm, it also can be a sign of danger. When too much fire is present, it can burn and destroy, thus causing great destruction.
Earth
Relating to real estate and personal legacies, the earth element represents the central teenage years. It is represented by the colors yellow, brown and beige. Earth symbols are patient, fair, honest and logical. This element, which is associated with relationships, marriage, education and knowledge, is sometimes used in the home to restore harmony and balance in a person’s life.
Metal
Also referred to as gold, the metal element is an example of yang because its smooth, shiny exterior encourages Chi to flow faster. It is a symbol of autumn and the adult years. Represented by various colors, including silver, gold, copper and bronze, this element can indicate harvest, business and success (usually financial success). However, metal also can represent a sword or a knife, indicating violence and destruction.
Water
Nourishing all living things, the water element represents the final years of life, relates to literature, the arts and the media, and is one of the most powerful elements. Connected to career and wealth, this dominant element is represented by fountains, aquariums, winter and the colors blue or black. It also is a sign of travel, communication and learning. Though it can be as gentle as a soft rainfall, water may also be as violent as a hurricane; therefore, it can gradually wear away even the hardest rock.
