• What is the budget?
• What type of improvements can the budget support?

A budget is one of the most crucial factors involved with designing a room; therefore, it is important for a person to determine how much they can afford to spend on their project. Since they may not be able to decorate their entire home at once, homeowners should begin with the rooms they use the most frequently.

• What feeling should the room depict to a guest or occupant?
• Does the project need a professional or can it be done easily?
• What color scheme should be used?

The colors used should not only be enjoyed by each occupant, but should be used throughout the entire home, letting one color dominate in each room. For example, a room may work well with one main color, and two or three accent colors.

• What patterns would enhance the mood of the room?

Freely mix and match florals, stripes, plaids, checks or textures with a favorite signature print. As long as the same colors are used throughout the room, a number of patterns can be used.

• Is the current style of the room acceptable?

Also, colors should be light and cool, and the number of prints should be kept to a minimum. Lastly, adding glass tables or wall mirrors may create the appearance of greater space.

Create a Formal Room
A formal room may be created by following a few simple steps. First, incorporating vertical lines will add height and dignity to any room; this can be achieved using coordinating wallpaper and borders, floor length window treatments or tall, vertical furniture pieces. Also, symmetrical balance, such as a sofa with two matching end tables, can add formality to a room. Another idea for creating a formal room is to use smooth textures, such as highly-polished wood or plush carpeting.

Create a Casual Room
Home interior design ideas for creating a casual room include using low, rectangular furnishings combined with deep wallpaper; horizontal lines create a sense of relaxation often connected to casual decorating. Using different textures in carpet, fabrics or wall coverings may create a country casual appearance.
