The bathroom is a place where you spend a lot of time. Just because it’s small and needs to be very functional doesn't mean you have to forget about aesthetics! Bathroom decorating doesn't have to be sterile. Here are some tips to enhance the appearance of your bathroom.
First the necessities:
The toilet no longer has to be the ugly white thing in the corner.
Sure you can still get the basic white one, but there are many options available with some even looking like pieces of modern art.
Fixtures and handles can usually be easily replaced to set a base for the mood or style of the bathroom. Some styles include elegant and curvy, modern and angular, vintage, brass, silver, black, white, or something else unique.
A recent bathroom trend is to have your sink formed by placing a basin-like bowl that holds the water on top of a cabinet. The basin is recessed into the cabinet surface so that the edges rise above the flat counter. This can add drama and style to your bathroom decorating scheme, but can also be expensive.
There are a huge range of options for your shower or bath. Anything from modern to a vintage clawed tub will help give you the desired look. Keep in mind that this part of the bathroom can easily be "hidden" and decorated simply by adding a shower curtain. These methods can add style without adding huge costs to your bathroom decorating project.
Flooring can be anything from classic tile to hardwood, or cheaper, more durable options made of easy to clean vinyl. Existing flooring can usually be painted with special floor paint in patterns that mimic tile, stone, etc. at a much lower cost.
Last, but not least, storage is a huge part of making a bathroom convenient and functional. You can choose to hide your storage in drawers or cabinets for a more organized, clean look. Leaving your storage open on wall shelves or on an over the toilet unit is another way to store your toiletries. Don’t' be afraid to use pieces that aren't necessarily meant for the bathroom to satisfy your storage needs (that old dresser from the attic can be painted!) Stores like the Container Store also have endless options for creating customized storage options in many colors and styles. Find creative ways to utilize little nooks and crannies for storage as well.
Because the bathroom is usually much smaller in proportion to the rest of the rooms in your house, the style and feel of the room must be achieved through smaller details and simpler colors. Most of the time, your best bet is to stick with a lighter color and simpler color palate. A dark color can make the small room seem even smaller and closed in. Lighter colors promote desirable bathroom moods like relaxation and harmony. However, light does not have to mean boring. Bright colors can be incorporated through art, towels, mats, shower curtains and other accessories to give the bathroom more life and excitement.
Be mindful of your budget before you begin your bathroom decorating. Because so much plumbing and electricity can be involved in redoing a bathroom, changes can end be very labor intensive and expensive. If you're on a small budget, and still want to make a significant change in your bathroom, consider choosing one large item to replace. Perhaps this could be the flooring, the vanity, a beautiful mirror, or a new tub or shower. Try to do it all and you'll be spending a lot of money, but changing one of these can have very dramatic effects if done right. To get the most bang for your buck, pick the thing with the most focus when you first walk into the bathroom. This could be the item that is in the center of the room, right in front of the door, or simply the largest item. Sometimes to make a major impact on the look of a bathroom, paint combined with accessories can go a long way. For example, refinishing the cabinets, or painting a pattern on the floor and of course painting the walls.
With all the commotion about fixtures, functionality and color, don't forget to add a few luxurious details like scented candles, soft curtains, or beautiful art or flowers. The bathroom should be functional, but should still feel like a room in your home. These should be the final details you attend to when finishing your bathroom decorating project. Now all the time you spend in there will be useful and enjoyable!
