What do you want out of the space where you sleep?
Color: Because bedrooms are mostly used for relaxation and sleep, you will want to keep the color scheme relaxed and calm. White mixed with warm colors – like yellow, baby blue, earthy pink or fresh green – will provide a clean, calm inviting bedroom.
The whiter the room, the crisper the look will be. The fewer colors included in the color scheme, the simpler and cleaner the look. Some might prefer a more dramatic look in their bedroom with darker colors or a modern black-and-white color scheme. Just remember to adequately set the mood for your sleeping space.
Bed: Hence the name “bed” room; the bed should the room’s decorating focus and its most important element. It often sets the tone, or strongly influences the feeling of the room. A high, four-post bed can add dramatic flair or an exotic escape. A clean-lined floor bed can provide a harmonious, Asian flair or modern taste to the room. Even a normal, plain bed can set the style for the room with a unique headboard.
Another great idea is to create a private alcove for your sleeping space, which will give it an immediate sense of intimacy and comfort. You can do this by building a bed into a recessed wall space or part of an L-shaped room, then curtain off the space to form an alluring nook.
Carefully choose the pattern and texture of the coverings on the bed and curtains to coordinate with your bedroom decorating style. These features will have a strong influence on the overall look and feel of the bedroom.
Closet/storage: Storage can be creatively built into a bedroom. Under-bed drawers, wall units, bedside baskets and customized shelving systems will make the space more convenient and help keep clutter organized and out of sight, keeping the room visually clean and relaxing.
Accessories/furniture: If your bedroom is small, accessories and extra furniture should be kept to a bare minimum because you do not want your bedroom to feel crowded. In this case, try keeping as much as possible off the floor to save space
If your bedroom is large, you may feel the room is bare. There are plenty of options to help transform your bedroom into a comfortable personal space for doing other types of relaxing. You can add a small table and chairs to create a sitting or reading area. Another idea is to create a mini library, covering a wall with built-in bookshelf units. Lastly, a vanity or dressing area can make getting ready easier, complete with a full-length mirror and a folding dressing screen.
Even in the smallest bedroom, you should try to create at least one other place to sit besides the bed. Also, make sure to incorporate at least one small storage area, shelf or flat space so the bedroom is not solely decorated by a bed. You will need to things in your bedroom other than just sleeping.
Lighting: There should be two types of lighting in your bedroom. One should be a soft overhead light creating a well-lit, clean ambiance in your bedroom at night without being too harsh or jarring.
The other type of light should be beside your bed and in any other area you might need focused lighting, such as a little sitting or vanity area. This supplemental light can be a ceiling fixture, but bedside lamps, wall-mounted lighting and floor lamps also work nicely. This type of lighting should be controlled within reach of the bed space; no one wants to get out of bed to turn off the bedside light after nightly reading.
